A final word on why mortgage brokers matter
A grateful goodbye
After more than 40 years in the financial industry—and the last 20 as a licensed mortgage broker—I’m officially retiring. Writing this final column for you, after 11 years of bi-weekly contributions, feels both surreal and deeply meaningful.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of people navigate one of the most important financial decisions of their lives. Whether it was a first home, a refinance, a rental property, or managing a tough financial situation, my goal has always been the same: to offer thoughtful, strategic mortgage advice that puts you—not a profit margin—first.
To my clients, referral partners, and industry peers: thank you. Your trust and support have made this journey both successful and rewarding. The long hours and complex challenges were always worth it when I receive messages like these:
"Enjoy retirement! So grateful for you in helping me obtain home ownership and thinking outside the box for options—you were truly a blessing for me!"
"Congratulations April... thank you for all your help over the years. Have a wonderful retirement!"
Those words—and the relationships behind them—remind me why I chose this profession and why I’ve been proud to advocate for the value of working with a mortgage broker.
As I sign off, I’d like to leave you with one final reminder: when it comes to mortgage financing, you always have a choice.
Banks are in the business of selling their own products. Mortgage brokers, on the other hand, are in the business of finding the right solution for you. We have access to multiple lenders, including major banks, credit unions, and alternative lenders—giving us the flexibility to offer personalized options based on your unique financial goals and circumstances.
Whether you need a competitive rate, help navigating self-employment income, bruised credit, or want to strategize for future equity-building or retirement goals, a mortgage broker can offer the kind of advice that goes beyond a one-size-fits-all approval.
The financial world is complex. Life is even more so. That’s why independent, experienced advice matters.
Although I’m retiring from active brokering, I remain passionate about helping Canadians make smart financial choices—and I encourage you to continue working with trusted professionals who are committed to your long-term success.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for allowing me to be part of your story.
