If the rest of us were to set prices the way the Oil Companies do we would all be in jail by now. I always thought it was illegal to take the competitive prices away. I just wonder if all the plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc all set one high price all exactly the same if the government would not put a stop to it.
Our government be it provincial or federal do nothing because of what they make off a litre of gas. If the price of gas goes up 10 cents then the government get an additional .65 cents a litre in GST. That may not seem like much but when you think of the hundreds of millions liters of gas bought each day in Canada that means a lot of money in GST. Of course the price would also be a little less if we were not paying GST on all the other taxes in the litre. Then again I thought that there was to be no GST on taxes.
You have to wonder why gas is cheaper in the states when we are also an oil producing nation, or why gas in some of the other oil producing nations in Asia are half the price ours is.
In the end I can only see that the government has a good thing going and don't want to rock the boat, and the oil companies are doing their best to show the Canadian Banks that they can make as much profit off the backs of the Canadian people. We can only change things through our votes. Next election demand that they do something, demand that your provincial MLA do something if they want your vote. Just remember that the extra 10 cents p/litre it costs you at the pumps is just the start of extra costs from these gas price hikes.
