Monaco Towers: A blight

Re: Monaco Towers

The continuation of the assault on Kelowna's downtown core by out-of-scale and ill-adapted tower construction would be a great theme for a science fiction movie, but it is horrifying in reality.

Added to the greed visibly on display in the adjustment of the construction size from one tower of 18 stories to two towers, of 23 and 26, is the utter disregard of this development for the area in which it is to be built.

Usually what it's called when city officials agree to accept money not to make a fuss, to accommodate something happening that really is against the express will of the people - is called bribe.  The fact that it is a large sum is not generosity - it is a pay-off.  If this developer has extra money to invest in the city, let him come up with a fitting development project; challenge him to enhance it with green features, community gardens, artwork, adequate parking and sound, integral construction; insist he respect the surrounding businesses, the growing number of residential neighbours and the Community Plan, let him incorporate a specific number of affordable units in perpetuity.

He could do all this because that's the way ethical business should be done, and the Mayor and Council are the ones responsible for seeing to this.  Then, you would leave a legacy, instead of a blight.
