Policing the downtown core isn't being conducted properly, obviously. Oh sure, cruisers pass by once and a while and during the summer months, officers on bikes increase the presence of law enforcement. But, as evidenced by recent business closures, relocations and the general deteriorating of the downtown area, it seems the bums are winning.
Having been a police officer in a city containing similar phenomena what seemed to work was COPS, that is Constable on Patrol, foot patrol or, in other words, walking the beat. Kelowna needs more foot patrolmen, period.
Personally, I'd recommend removing the expensive radar trap workers and redeploying them on the Downtown Beat, physically walking and offering a 24/7 police presence. If that requires additional expenses, then so be it. Mr. Mayor, spend the money.
Since we've moved here (over 10 years now) we have noticed a steady decline in what is known as the downtown core. With all kinds of bums, derelicts, drug dealers and other undesirables congregating in the park and certain streets we, and I think others, are less inclined to spent time down there to shop, visit or enjoy our city.
Let's have an increase in police presence, not sitting comfortable in an air conditioned car, but on foot patrol.
