In today's Daily Courier there is an article about a federal government loan of $1 million dollars to Calona Vineyards to invest in boxed wines.
I am all for boxed wines, if in fact, the reduced cost of preparation and packaging is passed on to the consumer. I went to the BCLC store nearby to make a comparison. What I found was that there is no savings whatsoever in buying a boxed wine.
When you look at the amount of wine in a typical three litre box,and you compare that to the equivalent number of 750 milliliters bottles, and you compare costs, there is no difference.
So my conclusion is this is a cash grab on the part of the wineries.
The cost of bottling versus boxing has to be much greater, just the cost of the bottles, corks, labels and manpower alone has to be higher.
So where is the advantage or incentive to buy boxed wines, other than storage. For those who are thinking about boxed wines and are looking for savings, there is none.
