Not sending Bertuzzi to jail is hardly letting him off. He will lose millions in salary before this is over and still may face a civil suit, that could potentially cost millions more.
It certainly wasn't by any stretch of the imagination a sportsman like thing to do. This happens all the time in the NHL, it just so happens that this time the consequences were extreme.
What would happen when two players are in a fight and one ends up being knocked out and falls to the ice hitting his head and ends up with brain damage. Should he be charged as well and do jail time?
Fans want violence to be part of the game, just watch the intensity in the stands rise at a Rockets game when a fight occurs.
