No council pay hike for now

As a Penticton small business owner who saw my property taxes double over the last four years with no added value, I was encouraged when city council members initially voted against a pay raise.

I believe that until city spending is controlled and tax increases do not exceed inflation, pay raises should not be considered. Small businesses must operate within a budget and the city should do the same.

I strongly recommend a value-for-money audit across all city expenses to remove unnecessary costs before any pay increases are contemplated. Furthermore, a task force chosen by city staff is insufficient, as it lacks the independence necessary for an unbiased audit.

What guidelines and information will be provided to this task force? Ultimately, council should vote directly on pay increases and take responsibility for that decision rather than utilizing a task force.

I would also like to acknowledge Coun. Shannon Stewart for her decision regarding the Dawson Avenue Shelter, which was based on statistics and the voices of her constituents.

While housing is necessary, the current program requires changes. With only 4% of participants entering treatment and 17% being housed, funds should be reallocated to more effective options. There must be accountability and empowerment for those receiving access to free housing.

Taxpayers are currently overextended and their concerns must be heard. Hard decisions are necessary to ensure the best interests of this municipality are met.

Janine Walker, Penticton
