Canadian US-owned media
Something is wrong with (Canada’s) print media industry and its online websites when one company owns the main newspapers in about 90 % of our major cities.
Postmedia also owns dozens of community newspapers.
What is Postmedia? It is a company that is majority owned by a (U.S. President Donald) Trump supporting, right-wing Republican company in U.S.
Chatham Asset Management of New Jersey is a private hedge fund owned by Anthony Melchiorre. It owns 66% of Postmedia, with voting control. It apparently strongly influences opinion and editorial comment. Melchiorre is a friend and funder of Trump.
In 2010, Postmedia was permitted by the Canadian government to buy all these Canadian newspapers, even though Postmedia was then owned by several U.S. hedge funds (now one).
So, where do Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Toronto (the National Post), Montreal (anglo newspaper), Halifax, St John’s, Charlottetown and all those smaller communities across the country get their opinion and editorial comment? From MAGA and tariff supporter(-owned papers.)
This issue should be immediately addressed by our federal parliament.
