Unhappy with ICBC penalty

I am the co-owner of a small family-run business located in the Similkameen Valley.

I (want) to share my recent experience with ICBC, which I believe highlights significant concerns regarding its billing practices and the impact on small businesses like mine.

Recently, I received two letters from ICBC. The first was a rebate cheque, which was a pleasant surprise. However, the second letter brought quite a shock.

As my wife entered the room, she handed me an invoice for $6,520, which I initially thought must be a mistake. Upon reviewing the details, I discovered the amount was attributed to a minor accident involving one of my employees, who had not been added to my company truck's insurance policy.

While I understand the importance of ensuring all drivers are properly insured, the severity of the penalty struck me as excessive. The accident resulted in damage primarily to the side mirrors of both vehicles, which ICBC informed me only cost around $2,000 to repair.

When I contacted ICBC's claims department to seek clarification, I was informed the invoice would not be altered and that I was solely responsible for the oversight, despite my employee rarely driving the vehicle.

During my conversation, I was told all employees must be listed on the policy, regardless of how infrequently they operate the vehicle. I expressed my confusion over the rationale behind such a hefty fine for what appeared to be a minor incident.

This experience has reinforced what many people in our community have expressed—frustrations regarding ICBC's monopolistic practices and the financial burden it places on small businesses.

For us, a penalty of $6,520 is not just an inconvenience, it jeopardizes our plans for growth and the future of our company.

I felt it was important to bring this issue to light, as I believe it resonates with many others who may be facing similar challenges.

I hope that by sharing my story, it can contribute to a larger conversation about the need for reform to ICBC's policies and practices.
