Re. Matt Irnie’s letter Feels Alberta has all cards (Castanet, May 8)
Two things (in the letter) struck me that caused me anxiety. Even the term “Alberta ‘holds all the cards’” is a term U.S. President Donald Trump has used.
First, “Alberta would do what’s in Alberta’s best interest—provide safe communities absent from government-enabled junkies, gun laws and ‘castle doctrine’ so Albertans can legally defend themselves and their property, no more GST would mean zero sales tax and healthcare that provides actual care rather than being out on a waiting list.”
It sounds like he is proposing loose gun laws, just like in the U.S. and pay as you go private healthcare, just like the U.S.
Second: “The creation of a commodity based currency (would mean) central bankers can’t print money indiscriminately. Most importantly it would mean “drill baby drill.”
The latter is a term Trump has used. The letter writer also wants to mine more coal. It is dirtiest fuel on earth—no care for the environment especially taking it from our beautiful Rockie mountains.
Third: “As far as trade goes, Alberta has the leverage. If other provinces don’t allow pipelines, Alberta could cut off fuel and LNG to the entire country. Alberta could also isolate B.C. by shutting down west-east trade.”
So where would Alberta sell all of this fuel and LNG? The only way is to build a pipeline south into Montana for the U.S. market. Ranchers there might have something to say about that. Also, in that statement is a veiled threat against B.C.
My suggestion to the letter writer is if he feels things are so bad, he is welcome to move to Alberta or better yet, to the U.S.
It is so disheartening to hear this from someone in B.C., let along Canada. I can assure you most BCers do not feel this way. I certainly don’t.
