I am a retired service member. I have read with interest recent letters submitted to Castanet.
I chose to enlist and serve my country. I enlisted because I saw an opportunity to better myself and get an education and trades training that I would not otherwise have been able to afford.
The service offers everyone the opportunity for advancement, higher education or career change if you're willing to work towards that.
Yes, when I signed up I understood there was the possibility of putting myself in harm’s way. But isn't Canada worth fighting for? Someone has to stand up for the rights and freedoms all Canadians enjoy.
I am proud I served my country and would encourage anyone who is interested to enlist.
To the individual who had past (family) members who served and who mentioned Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder, family breakups et cetera, there are many other occupations that have the same problems. Policing is one.
