Re. Robert Hepting's letter, Make it a 12-hole course (Castanet, April 25)
Many years ago, I played 12-hole golf at the Uplands Golf course Victoria.
Both of my daughters were going to university in Victoria and the shorter time of the round was great. It was weird at the time because I was playing as a single. You had to ask who you were joining and if they were (playing) 12 or 18 holes.
The 12th hole came back to the club house. Uplands did not offer a special rate for 12 holes. Uplands was a private course that took on a dozen or so green fee players. Most of the members were seniors. It was very fun. Players changed partners after six holes,
and they still called front and back.
(The round took) two hours and 15 minutes.
For a golfer it was very different. Concentration was vital. There is no room for a seven or eight when playing stroke play.
The after-golf was much more enjoyable, and relaxing and people stayed and talked, had a pop or two, perhaps crib and was and home by 3:30 p.m.
At 74, I would like to do that again.
