Easter Sunday marked three months since the inauguration of the “second coming” of U.S. President Donald Trump, and frequent televised events in the Oval Office have revealed changes in its decor.
There’s a lot more gold-coloured ornaments on display, along with a large and flattering portrait of former president Ronald Reagan, who often described America as the "Shining City On The Hill”, and whose 1980 campaign slogan was “Let’s Make America Great Again”.
He was idolized by many as a super-patriot and as the “Great Communicator”.
Ironically, during his time in office most of the globalization, outsourcing and off-shoring took hold, with manufacturing companies moving first to Mexico and then to China and other countries in the Far East.
They totally abandoned the U.S. work force, taking advantage of new trade regulations, much cheaper labour costs, less stringent environmental policies, etc, abroad. So it all sounds a little backward for Trump to now order coal mines to reopen and encourage factories to return from abroad to manufacture American-made products that will be the envy of the world but be far more expensive.
Trump’s convinced he’ll be able to reverse what has taken place over the past half century, and it reminds me of a song title from 1989 that was a chart-topper from Cher, who, believe it or not, was born in the same year as Trump.
Having already adopted Ronald Reagan’s campaign slogan, now is the time to adopt Cher’s song title, which suits Trump’s ambition perfectly.
Wouldn’t the world love to see him dressed in one of Cher’s “barely-there” stage costumes belting out “If I could turn back time.”
