I don’t always agree with the Liberals or their policies but people tend to forget all countries around the world experienced a once-in-a-100-year pandemic that crippled world economies, supply chains and livelihoods of many along with illness and death.
It was a very scary time. I was comforted by a prime minister who came out every day to reassure Canadians, offer supports and encouragement. Some argue he just printed money but his policies at the time saved many business as well as individuals from financial ruin.
Did he always get it right, no, but he certainly tried his best. My adult children for example, who lost their jobs, had CERB and rent subsidies to get them through so they would not end up homeless until they could find work again.
I remember, when asked about his support, the Conservative leader said, “We are Conservatives, we don’t believe in that”.
He would have left us all to our own devices, and I don’t think it would have turned out well. Now we have to recover from those expenditures and the inflation it caused, as many countries are still struggling to do if you listen to those countries leaders.
Former (Conservative) prime minister Stephen Harper inherited a surplus from (the previous) Liberal (government), ran 10 years of cuts and austerity but with yearly deficits. It was a difficult time for me and my family as I was, part of the “sandwich generation,” looking after aging parents, working and raising children.
At times, I thought we would not survive. We did, barely. He was also the prime minister who turned to the current Liberal leader (Mark Carney) to guide us through the 2008 financial crisis.
Now the choice is between someone who for the last two years has been raging that the country is broken (Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre), creating hate and division, in my opinion, who’s supporters are scary as they harass and demand you follow their beliefs or else, and a world-class, well-respected economist (Carney) who had lead in a crisis before and is calm and steady with a progressive plan to move us forward, stabilize our economy, have it grow and deal with U.S.
For me, my choice is clear.
