Poilievre's trifecta nightmare

Re: Carney says U.S. must stop 'disrespectful' comments before trade talks take place (Castanet, March 17)

Prime Minister and Liberal party Leader Mark Carney brings years of both domestic and global financial experience to the table.

What does Conservative party Leader Pierre Poilievre bring to the table? Being a career politician for 21 years. The only thing he knows is politicking and attacking.

Poilievre's trifecta nightmare has come true:

1. Justin Trudeau stepped down as Liberal leader (and prime minister)

2. U.S. President Donald Trump stepped up his threats of tariffs on Canadian products and resources

3. Carney won the Liberal leadership race

Events over the past three months have rewritten the story of the upcoming federal election. There isn’t going to be a “carbon-tax” election, there’s going to be a Trump-tariff election.

So, if Poilievre can't find a way to write himself a new role, he will go from Conservative hero who played the victim, to Conservative zero who lost the election.

Pollster Philippe J. Fournier writes on 338canada.ca (March 18): "In a dramatic shift, Léger now measures the Liberals leading nationally with 42% support, while the Conservatives trail at 39%. Given the poll’s sample size, a three-point lead remains within the margin of error, but the momentum is clear."

The most important question a person needs to answer before heading to the voting booth is, between Mark Carney, Pierre Poilievre and (NDP Leader) Jagmeet Singh, who is best qualified to negotiate with Trump, and to protect Canada's sovereignty?
