Spread tariff truths

Our federal government really needs to up its game and plaster the American news with facts about our trade agreements with the U.S.

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans blindly believe the nonsense U.S. President Donald Trump spews. Americans should be reminded Trump signed the latest (U.S.-Canada-Mexico free trade) deal, the CUSMA. At the time he called it the best deal ever.

His claim that U.S. dairy is charged a tariff of more than 200% must be clarified to state U.S. dairy products have never exceeded the threshold so those tariffs have never been applied and likely will not be in the future.

His outrageous claim about the U.S. subsidizing Canada needs clarification. Trump falsely claims there is a $200 billion trade deficit with Canada but according to the official U.S. statistics it is $35.7 billion.

Trump claims Canada doesn’t take U.S. agricultural products. The truth is, Canada is the second largest buyer of U.S. agriculture products.

Perhaps, if Republicans were enlightened with the truth, Trump may tone down the tariff war.

We can only hope.
