We are watched, tracked

Re. Concerns over new cameras and Bill Ferguson’s letter, Cameras everywhere now (Castanet, Jan. 30)

I agree with letter writer Bill Ferguson.

As for the (Kelowna resident) who is concerned about (city) cameras monitoring his comings and goings, he can go to his Google account and check where he was at a precise time eight months ago and it'll show him the route he took and the stops he made to get there. Just open Google Maps, click on "You” and then click on "Visited".

If I were living in a more rural area, like east Kelowna, I would support cameras that recorded license plates and time that vehicles entered an area. Even in (more urban areas of the city), that would be a good idea.

Imagine if your house was broken into, a child abducted or a car stolen. You would have most of the information needed to make an arrest. The only thing better than a camera recording licence plates and times would be one recording speeds as well. What a good way to deter dangerous driving, prowling, and criminal activity in general.

One reason there are two in close proximity might be they are monitoring two different routes. Maybe a contractor has been billing the city for work it suspects wasn't provided. That's just my guess. Either way, the public will benefit.

As previously ruled in court, if someone doesn't want to be recorded on cameras, they shouldn’t go out in public. Even if those cameras were pointed right at his house, they would be legal (unless zoomed in on a window or into a backyard).

Anything visible from to the public can be recorded, period. The city is not required to warn him, just like he isn’t required to warn people walking past his home about security cameras, same as entering a business or anyone visible on vehicle’s dash camera.

Did you know that some, or all, Tesla cars record their surroundings on all four sides?

Also, did you know those devices that have multiple colour's and measurements to show how tall a person is when entering or exciting a business? Look closely at them, they have wee little cameras capturing your face as you exit the store—hidden, discrete and legal.
