Dear Cop:
I have always wondered about unlicensed farm vehicles i.e.: tractors of various sorts. I see them barreling around East Kelowna and South Rutland presumably traveling from one orchard to another. What happens if they hit me or a pedestrian? Are they not required to have a license plate and insurance if they are on a public roadway? How would someone report this activity if it is an offense, I can't see it being a priority for Police.
Answer From Dear Cop:
A farm tractor is not required to have insurance or a license plate. However, Section 8 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that ICBC may issue a license for a farm tractor owned by a farmer if the tractor is used for towing a trailer to transport the produce of the farmer's own farm to market and to transport supplies for the farm, or, towing an implement of husbandry used by or on behalf of the farmer.
