Government-built homes?

When my dad came back from the Second World War, there was not much available for him to live in, in Vancouver.

The government of the day started building houses for the vets to rent,— the first were Seaforth Village. We lived there until I was five and then we moved to Fraserview, which was brand new. My dad rented that house until I was 13 and then he bought it.

Why can’t we do something like that today? (It would) gives one pride of ownership and eventually they may be able to buy their rental house.
