Wrong to demand DNA test

Re. William McBride’s letter DNA test for Sainte Marie (Castanet, Nov. 23)

Why won't Buffy Sainte Marie just get a DNA test? Article 33 of the U.N. Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), that's why.

What more colonial idea is there than to force Indigenous people to prove their identity through modern or colonial means?

Indigenous cultures use spoken language. Their records traditionally were passed down through stories from elders to the next generation.

Some Indigenous people denied their heritage and ran from their homes during the residential school era.

This nonsense about cancelling or ridiculing Indigenous people who can’t, or won’t, produce the documents demanded of them has got to stop.
