Tighten self-identification

Re. UBC regrets handling of Turpel-Lafond, as she loses honour at another university (Castanet. Jan. 17)

There are two ways to get ahead in Canada—be the best in your field or pretend.

Self-identify as indigenous and move the needle in your favour. This is a great injustice to every Indigenous person. These “pretendians” are cheats. They know they are not Indigenous but pretend to be to advance their careers.

Living for a time in Saskatchewan, I heard about (former judge and former UBC law professor Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond) as a judge. At one hearing, she broke into tears while hearing the plight of the perpetrator. Was that an act to solidify her presence as a Cree? Hopefully not.

We need to tighten up a lot of self-identification so real Indigenous people can truly claim their rightful place instead of “pretendians.”
