Alcohol-related deaths are up. Drug overdoses are up. Hospital wait times are up.
Discord in our healthcare system is up. Discord in our political system is up. Food bank visits are up. Charitable donations are down. Bankruptcies are up. Suicides are up. Depression and anxiety are up, especially among children and youth. Domestic violence is up. Inflation is (way) up. Taxes are up. Interest rates are up. Government debt is (way) up. Math and reading scores are down. Hostility between neighbours, friends and family members is up and a recession is on the way or, more likely, is already here.
Was it all worth it? There are many more metrics to use than strictly virus deaths when measuring the overall health and success of a community or society.
When, and how, are we as a country going to have an adult conversation about the true costs and benefits of COVID mandates and lockdowns? What should we do next time a pandemic comes along?
Are we just going to blindly follow whatever we hear on the six o'clock news or read on Facebook?
