Re. Brownies renamed Embers (Castanet, Jan. 11)
Both my daughters were Brownies. In my mind, the name seemed to be because of the colour of their uniform not because of some weird racial interpretation.
My daughters loved (being) Brownies. Apparently (the name) was changed to be more inclusive and welcoming. I can’t see how (the new name) Embers is either.
So what has changed? How is the organization different? Does the name imply racism?
Are we becoming so politically correct that we must change everything because someone might be offended? How does calling them Embers, which means a small piece of burning or glowing coal or wood in a dying fire, make everything right?
The article indicated someone joined because of the name change. Wow, one person. How many did they lose?
What does this accomplish? In my mind not one thing, but then again I am in the majority who value tradition, common sense and ethics.
