Help at home first

I find it unfathomable that there can be the level of support that is shown for the federal Liberal Party in certain areas of our province.

Let me be clear, I emphasize “federal,” as I support our provincial B.C. Liberal Party.

We live in Western Canada. We live in British Columbia. How on earth can you support a federal political party that is virtually owned by Ontario and Quebec, a federal political party that typically acts in a manner contrary to the interests of Western Canada?

This isn’t a new or unexperienced phenomenon. It has existed for years and we, in certain areas of this province and in Western Canada, generally fall into the same trap every election essentially nullifying any real effect on which party runs our country by 6 p.m. PST (on election day).

By way of example, the (last Liberal) minority government, during its tenure, gave away over $1 billion our our tax dollars to other countries to support programs over which we have no control. They are attractively labeled as programs in support of health care, education, family support, etc.

Where the money ultimately goes we have no real idea.

What about our provinces that struggle with maintaining adequate levels of health care and facilities Pandemics such as COVID will probably happen again. Will be better prepared next time.

What about additional support for our country’s educational system and support for families so we can re-build a middle class that has all but disappeared?

I see no shame in addressing the needs of our own country first and then be in a better position to help others.

Allan Kleinfelder, West Kelowna
