Government to blame

Your poll of June 9/'21 asked "Who bears more responsibility for the residential school system?" Over 50% of respondents feel that the church bears the most responsibility. I respectfully suggest the question could have been posed more carefully, and the results are therefore suspect.

It was the federal government that created the residential school system, the purpose of which was to assimilate the indigenous population into the European culture through its children.

The federal government handed the job of running the residential school system to the church, and without a doubt, the church monumentally mishandled the job.

Perhaps the question should have read: "Who bears more responsibility for the ongoing pain and suffering caused by the residential school system." Posed this way, I believe the results of the poll would confirm that the government bears the greatest responsibility.
