It's just not reported

Re: Property crime levels drop

Somehow I just don’t think so! The report on crime does clarify however, because it is based on the crimes being reported. And herein lies the cause of the doubt — are all personal property crimes actually being reported? Just a few weeks back, my car was broken into, the passenger window smashed and some ridiculously trivial items grabbed from inside (it seems vehicles have alarms but only if a door is opened when the car has been locked and the key isn’t nearby).

Called the RCMP, their questions. Do you have any video or pictures of the break in? Answer “no”.

Do you have any suspects in the crime? Answer “no." OK well do an on-line report of the incident.

My question; is any police officer going to attend? Their answer, “No, do an online incident report."

So I have to ask, because I have this inquiring mind, how many people are going to take the time to go and find the online site to complete this report. How many are then going to actually bother knowing full well they have no evidence of the crime (video / picture / suspect). Perhaps Castanet could set this up as a poll, asking if readers will / would do the online reporting, that might give some credence to the police report that “crime” is down.

Having said all of that of course, it seems we must have a surplus of police members in our community because they have less crime to investigate and they sure as hell don’t attend minor crime reports where there is no evidence. And if that’s the case, hen we – the people of Kelowna, let me rephrase that, the honest and hard working people of Kelowna, would be truly served by some staff rescheduling, extra night duty shifts to check the neighbourhood streets for the night-time cyclists and wanderers who go around and do the minor crimes. You know, prevention, which is a large part of policing services.

Oh and by the way, it cost me $300 (the deductible) to get my car fixed. Thanks to some overnight person being able to wander our streets because policing in our neighbourhoods doesn’t seem to exist. Maybe the top cop would like to comment on that.
