Talk About Drugs

I work at a business in the downtown area and witnessed an unusual and disturbing site on Friday afternoon. On the sidewalk outside the Leon Avenue doors of the TD Bank there was a young girl shooting herself full of drugs. I saw her using a lighter and spoon to "cook" the drugs, she then pulled out a syringe and loaded it.

Next she took off her shoe and using the lace (with the shoe still attached) tied off her upper arm to make her veins more accessible. She proceeded to inject herself with the drug right there on the street. I was rather shocked by the whole thing. I wasn't quite sure how to proceed with this whole situation. I thought about contacting the RCMP, but being that the girl was gone I didn't think there would be much they could do.

It kept preying on my mind though and finally I decided, after seeing on your website an item about the Mayor warning about the drugs and our youth, that I should contact you. I am the mother of 2 teenagers and talk frequently to them about drugs and all the other things that they have to make choices about. I feel strongly that education and conversation are the strongest protection against the dangers to our children.

I hope that other parents out there realize that the more we talk to our kids, and let them know that no matter what we will always be there for them, that they will have a better chance of making safer choices.

I hope to never see anything like this again, but I am afraid that it is all too probable. I just hope that the next time it isn't a kid that I know.

C.R.
