Current rules are enough

The government has no proof that curfews or travel restrictions will help slow the growth of Covid.

If they did have proof, only then could the government even remotely consider infringing on our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but that would still be quite a stretch.

The problem with government overriding our Charter rights would then be getting them to rescind those laws immediately after the crisis has passed. This would be an incredibly dangerous precedent. Taking away our freedoms is matter for the Supreme Court of Canada, not something to be decided by health or elected officials. Neither of those groups are experts on our Constitutional Rights.

What might the next crisis be that comes along where politicians feel the need to take away our rights?

I for one, am not willing to take a chance on letting John Horgan write more laws that restrict my freedom to move about the country, or travel freely about my city at night.

The provincial government has already granted themselves “extraordinary powers” to make such decisions as they see fit. There has been no debate in our legislature. Decisions being made by a few people whom we cannot hold accountable. We don’t even know who they are.

Consider Dr. Peter Berman, a top “disease official” at UBC. Nobody knew his name until Dr. Berman ignored the same advise that he wants all of us to follow and went to Hawaii for a two week holiday at Christmas. His hypocrisy has brought him only small repercussions. He lost a small part of his prestige within his position and had his salary reduced from $410,000.00 per year to $400,000 per year. Not a lot of punishment going on there!

Sorry, senior bureaucrats, we are not all in this together! All of you continue to be paid your very generous wages and benefits, thousands of people have lost their jobs, and are asked to survive on the CERB of $2,000.00 per month. Dr. Berman makes that much every two days.

We should all be very alarmed that invading our rights is even being considered.

Dr. Bonnie is already doing a good job of managing the covid crisis. I can live with the restrictions that she has imposed to date. Hopefully, we will win the battle against covid this year.

I am not willing to accept any further restriction of my Freedom.

Gerry Epp, Vernon BC
