Saudi not our friends

Re: UBC grad jailed 6 years

Your report on the latest abuse of human rights in Saudi Arabia is timely. We have known for years that they are one of the most brutal regimes in the world and yet we continue to do business with them

The "crimes" committed by Loujain Al-Hathloul were to advocate for women's rights, to be allowed to drive a car, to go out without a male guardian, and to obtain a passport. For this she was kidnapped in Abu Dhabi and imprisoned, tortured and sexually assaulted.

The killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi is gradually fading from people's minds, but we should also remember that the Crown Prince sent his hit squad to Canada in an attempt to muder Dr. Daad Aljabri who holds detailed information about the working of the Saudi police state. It was only due to the vigilance of our border services that they were not successful.

All the time the Saudis continue their indiscriminate bombing of Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the world, and the site of a huge humanitarian crisis. The targets of the bombing have included a hospital, a detention centre and a funeral. Human Rights Watch estimate that 729 children have died in the process. It seems to me that they can't sink much lower than this.

In the meantime it's business as usual for Canada. Despite the fact that we have the third largest reserves of oil in the world we import oil from Saudi Arabia which comes halfway round the world and into the St. Lawrence river. Not only that but these imports are increasing. One would have thought that building a pipeline from northern Alberta and supporting our own industry and our own citizens would be a no-brainer.

I'm glad that Mr. Biden has promised to look into the cosy relationship between the US and Saudi, but what of our fearless leader? He tells us that he is a feminist and an environmentalist and yet we hear no criticism of a regime that runs counter to all the beliefs he supposedly holds. In short he is all froth and no substance.

We deserve better.
