Don't feed ducks bread

Please tell the public not to feed ducks and geese bread.

There is little nutrition in bread, and it leads to a condition known as "angel wings" that prevents the birds from being able to fly.

Whole grain, such as chicken feed, is good for the birds during the winter and is available at most pet stores or farm supply stores.

Last year, we fed the mallards in West Kelowna 500 pounds of chicken feed.

If you Google "angel wings," information to validate my concerns is available. There was a recent report that in the Ottawa regions, thousands of water birds are afflicted and unable to migrate.
