Fuhr is no 'blip' in history

When Liberal candidate Stephen Fuhr won the Kelowna-Lake Country riding in the last federal election in 2015, there was a suggestion that his victory was a “blip” in this usually Conservative territory and that it wouldn’t happen again.

I wrote then, and again now, saying I believed that a Liberal victory at that time, and again in this election, signals a significantly different Kelowna. There has been an influx of younger, better educated, more worldly, more inclusive, more collaborative, and more socially engaged people.

Values articulated by the Liberal party in its policies of diversity, reconciliation, unity, immigration, and social engagement resonate with these newcomers as there’s is a broader world where they recognize that Canada’s Liberal party is one of the few speaking their values in an increasing fractured and strident world. They are part of a globally inclusive world and want to be represented by a party that reflects their values.

If you have walked into Fuhr's campaign office, you see those Liberal policies in action in the demographics, the diversity, the energy, and the unity of purpose of those involved. It is his community reflected and, importantly, there is no special interest group behind the scenes directing his campaign.

Stephen has diligently shown up for debates throughout his riding, he has spoken to students of all ages to urge them to become involved in the political process, he has spoken to those gathered for arts performances, he understands and is respected by veterans, he knows business and understands the challenges of the competitive market place, and he has compassion for those who are confronted by homelessness and mental health issues beyond serving Thanksgiving dinner.

Stephen has done a remarkable job being both an articulate voice and a recognizable face for his constituency during his first term – far more so than has been the case with previous MPs from this area. If we as electors in this community, want Ottawa to know we exist and have opportunities that would be enhanced with federal government involvement, then we need to vote for Stephen Fuhr for a second term to make sure this is our reality.
