Criminals don't licence guns

Re: No guns for me, thanks

Mr. Cartwright, your ignorance on this issue is quite evident.

You are, of course, most definitely entitled to your opinion. But I am so tired of reading and hearing from people who obviously have no knowledge of the topic.

Do you honestly believe the issue of guns is not already and has not been taken seriously in this country for decades?

Do you actually have any idea what it currently takes for a person in Canada to legally obtain and maintain a Possession and Acquisition license (PAL) in this country? Let me enlighten you:

  • You must take an RCMP approved firearm safety course.
  • Pass a written exam.
  • Pass a practical exam.
  • Submit an application and payment to the RCMP.
  • Pass background check (including mental health, spouse) and reference checks.
  • Pass daily background checks.

I fully respect your right to not want to own a firearm, but I legally do, for reasons I do not have to justify. So, I suggest you respect my right to because I already have and continue to be vetted by our government to do so.

This government has done absolutely nothing to curb gun violence or gun deaths by gangs and criminals with its increased background checks. They have only made it more difficult for law-abiding citizens who wish to go through the already thorough process to own a firearm so they can enjoy the sports and recreations they choose.

I hope you realize criminals and gang members don't have firearm's licences, so don't get background checks!

Jeff Kraus
