Get informed, then vote

British Columbians have an important decision to make, and I fear that much of the province has made up its mind without due diligence.

Changing our electoral system is no small feat. I appreciate that. However, I have read many letters and columns, here and elsewhere, complaining about how 'complex' the process is, or how confusing proportional representation is. The truth is, we live in a complex world.

Solving homelessness isn't simple. Addressing pollution and resource scarcity while growing our economy is difficult.

If our voters can't take the time to educate themselves fully on the issues we face – if they perceive simplicity as more desirable than accurate representation in our government, perhaps they need to reconsider their decision to vote at all.

I think everyone should vote, but I also think everyone should take the time to inform themselves. The process should take time. Voting cannot be an afterthought, or a knee-jerk decision. For those who find the referendum too confusing, I would say you must invest more energy in your electoral duties.

A ballot cast in ignorance will cause more harm than good.

Go to elections.bc.ca, and learn about your options. Naturally, you're free to vote however you please, but I sincerely hope you take the time to understand the gravity of your decision, not just for this referendum, but for every vote you cast.
