An eye on council

Unlike a great many districts, Vernon has a new city council with three new faces – Kari Gares, Kelly Fehr, and Victor Cumming.

How will this new council differ from the last one? I think it will be one that reflects a greater emphasis on the social agenda that is representative of the role Fehr has in the community, and that of retiring councillor Juliette Cunnigham.

The disappointing number of people who voted may soon see a shift in the policies of this city, affording more emphasis on the plight of the homeless and street-entrenched, which did much to impact the election results.

We have a system of government that hundreds of thousands of people fought and died for so we could vote without fear or intimidation. It would be dishonouring to all those who died for us to bemoan results we hadn't hoped for.

I don't intend to do that. I do intend to do what I started a few years ago – closely observing and reporting on what people are doing at City Hall with our tax dollars and the city's future integrity.

Dean Roosevelt, Vernon
