Leave things as they are

I have noticed many letter writers have lots to say as to why we should change our current voting system, but few are chiming in on why the current system in place is good for the province or why we should keep it.

Our current system puts the best interests of our province as a whole first. Sometimes we get who we want in office, and sometimes we don't. Our current system has proportional representation on a regional basis, not individual views.

Each region has different needs from the next. The Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island might have more invested into ocean waters and coastlines or the film industry. Kootenay regions have forestry and coal mining. The Okanagan has the orchards, wineries, lakes, tourism. The Peace River, Fraser and North Coast all have oil and gas interests.

One thing all these places have in common is that the industries are all vital to our economy.

What about healthcare? We have great hospitals in the Okanagan and Vancouver area, but what about the other areas that all have to travel to see our specialists or don't even have hospitals?

Likewise, Vancouver has a great transit system, bus routes and taxis. But, many places require you to have a vehicle and you forced to commute on your own, as public systems are not available.

Our province is very diversified.

If we are to change anything, maybe we should break down the party seats by land mass. This way, we know each region is proportionally represented at election time.

Why should the majority of the population dictate the fate of the majority of B.C.'s area that is not associated with that population? Maybe we should only have two parties so that we don't have a government like our current one, where two losing parties who fought against each other become allies so they can overthrow the leading party.

We should just leave things as they are.

Think about what this vote means. Besides affecting you, it could affect 4.6 million other people's lives, jobs and futures.
