Incumbent reluctance

We are longtime residents of Kelowna, and are extremely dismayed at several of the actions from our Kelowna city council over the past couple of years.

They totally ignored a petition signed by many of our Curlew Drive neighbours when an application was made for a carriage house. This action required that two major changes to our neighbourhood occur – that the Land Use Contract be terminated and the area be rezoned.

Another petition signed by over 1,200 residents of the Upper Mission on the exploding deer population has also been ignored. The deer continue to flourish, our gardens and properties continue to be damaged.

A new application for a secondary suite on Curlew Drive, which had been a single-family neighbourhood, has been approved. Now, we are finding ourselves with citizens openly operating secondary suites and then asking forgiveness afterwards when found out. Their tenants never park on the owner’s property, but always on the streets, which is against the city bylaw.

The tourism centre on the downtown lakefront was another matter where council ignored the concerns of a great many citizens, and now we are stuck with another building right on the lakeshore. This whole scenario flew in the face of the tourism group, which promoted that many tourists actually do their searches online, not in person!

Another development called Kestrel Ridge was approved for the Upper Mission, so guess what? More traffic congestion on the one road leading in and out of this area.

Another issue was the approval of more highrise buildings, not in the downtown core but out at Truswell Road near the Eldorado Hotel. We believe that this action also went against the OCP of the city.

These actions show a total disregard for citizens and their concerns.

Traffic has vastly increased, and now we have the “Lakeshore Crawl,” especially through the Eldorado Road/Lakeshore Road school location. Often, traffic is backed up to Summerhill winery.

Do councillors ever venture out to see the results of their various actions? We are left to deal with increased traffic, parking on our streets impairing winter snow clearing, and the list goes on.

We are very reluctant to vote for any current incumbents in this election.

C.V. and H.C. Comben, Kelowna
