Don't believe the gossip

Over the last several years, the use of social media in political arenas has become common practice. In many cases, tidbits of information are sprinkled around and have replaced truth, knowledge and common sense.

This current civic election has seen the underbelly of our humanity. It pales in comparison to how Facebook and Twitter can disrupt a U.S. election, but nevertheless lies are spewed, friendships are ruined and decent people are otherwise reduced to their childlike selves.

As a tech entrepreneur who has studied the impacts of social media, I can assure you that little good comes from these online smear campaigns, but lives can be ruined. I also grew up to a single mom, lived in affordable housing and spent a great deal of my time with addicts, so I am informed.

I believe one side in this race is hoping your confusion will be enough to win the vote.

In the mayor's race, I have met both candidates. I know Colin Basran more than I know Tom Dyas. They both have served this city in different ways, using their time to bring this city to its current state.

At one time, I also know that these two men were once good friends. I have met passionate people on both sides of this race who deeply believe in their candidates. Unfortunately, in an age of social media where a tool is weaponized, lies replace truth and behind the scenes of these candidates are often mothers, and in one case a mother with young children.

I am a dear friend of Leanne Basran. She is an honest, loving, caring and deeply passionate mother, wife and friend. She does not come from pampered roots, she understands deeply the needs of families. She understands those who have struggled with addiction and what it is like to survive. She is a survivor.

She is strong and loving and will without question bring to all of our attention the truth.

I may not agree with every decision council or Mayor Basran makes, but I do believe that this council has the collective capacity to seek truth. Balance is key.

I believe the Basrans truly love this city. Do not settle for gossip. Step away from Facebook and take a walk in our great city. It's time for all of us to return to hope, respect and yes, love.
