Safety net, if needed

None of the proportional representation systems on the referendum ballot will result in a loss of the important connection between the voter and their local representative in the B.C. legislature, as proponents of the current system claim.

On the contrary, with pro rep, voters will have additional connections to more than just one local district/regional MLA. In most cases, those representatives will come from both the government and opposition ranks. This will empower voters by providing them with an opportunity to interact with an MLA they see as well positioned to deal with their concerns, and/or one who most closely shares their political views. And these MLAs are all directly accountable to the constituent voters via the ballot box.

Contrary to the misinformation being spread by its detractors, with the proposed pro rep systems, political parties will not be appointing any of your MLAs. It is expected that people will nominate candidates from the constituency (district and region) where they live, work, and participate in the life of their communities. In each system, all MLAs would be elected by the voters of those same districts and regions, that comprise that MLA’s distinct constituency, much as it happens now.

The referendum legislation guarantees that, the percentage of MLAs from each region of B.C. will remain the same under proportional representation, as they are now. That means no region of the province will have any more or less influence or power, over the decisions of government, than it does today.

Legislation was recently put forth requiring that any electoral reform resulting from this year’s referendum be reviewed and reconsidered by a second referendum after two elections. So it’s like we get to test drive the vehicle for 20,000 kilometres, then still be able to return it, and go back to first past the post. I doubt we will; but for the faint of heart there is that safety net.
