City says road is safe

A recent letter to the editor declared the newly-installed roadway at the intersection of Ogden and Boucherie Roads in West Kelowna is too narrow, and therefore, dangerous.

This is not the case.

A road safety audit on the design of Boucherie Road was conducted by ICBC, which made recommendations to improve safety along the corridor. In fact, ICBC gave West Kelowna a grant in the amount of $120,000 because the road is classified as safe.

Boucherie Road is classified as an urban arterial roadway and the design provided by Stantec Consultants Ltd. conforms to both the City of West Kelowna Works and Services Bylaw and the Transportation Association of Canada guidelines.

The improved road includes two travel lanes, sidewalks and cycle tracks. The pedestrian and cycling lanes have been separated from the travel lanes with a boulevard as an added safety measure.

The travel lanes have been designed to accommodate a semi tractor-trailer.

The letter writer takes issue with the road width, claiming it is too narrow. But he does not include in his measurement the concrete curb pan, which accounts for an additional 0.6 metres of travel lane.

As much as I appreciate that motorists towing large recreational vehicles prefer a wider road, reducing the speeds on Boucherie Road was a safety must. Narrowing the road width, yet still accommodating all kinds of traffic, meets this objective.
