It's not about the helmet

I am miffed by the media’s fascination with bicycle helmets.

A cyclist lost his life recently in Kelowna and will never see another sunrise or sunset again – and the media reminds us at the end of the story that he was not wearing a helmet?

I am an avid cyclist and do wear a helmet to protect myself in case I fall.

The helmet is designed to protect me from injuring my head, not to stop a several ton Ford F-350 from running me over and causing traumatic, life-ending injuries.

The RCMP and media seem to think a helmet will protect you from this situation.

Out of respect for the victim and his family, if the helmet wasn’t able to help the doomed cyclist, please don’t even mention it. It makes him sound like he was not an intelligent or law-abiding person.

No wonder we are living in a “nanny state” with the cops, government and media all showing us the way.

Doug Rosen, Kelowna
