After-school care lacking

I am deeply upset with the complete lack of before and after-school care provided in Rutland.

My husband and I both work full time.

When we first moved back to Rutland three years ago, I called countless daycares looking for an opening for my then two-year-old and was continuously put on waitlists, only to be told: “we will call when a space becomes available.”

After months, we finally lucked out and found a spot in a lovely daycare close to our house (truly a blessing).

Now, it seems we are back in the process of struggle.

My son is turning five this July, and with that milestone comes an even bigger one – kindergarten.

With many out-of-home daycares, such as ours, this is when you say goodbye to the lovely people who have been caring for our children and move to school.

With the current school schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., it is crucial to have care before and after school.

I was naive to think there would be space in these local programs for our son. I know this now after repeatedly calling programs, and waiting in line for hours to register.

I have now received my second email notifying us that our son has again been waitlisted.

This has changed this exciting time to a time of stress and worry. Now what?
