Where guns come from

Chantelle Deacon's report "74 guns seized from home" in Spallumcheen (April 23) deserves revisiting for the stubborn recurrence of a fallacious comment put forward by Const. Kelly Brett.

Const. Brett used the spurious argument that "most firearms used in crime are domestically sourced."

Not true.

If she, or anyone else, would like to research the true source of "crime guns" (illegally acquired guns used in a crime), she could begin with Daniel Fritter's column on CalibreMag.ca - "Bulk of Crime Guns Domestically Sourced? False! Try 33%."

And Fritter is being generous in using this high number. Other studies have yielded much lower percentages.

The RCMP are performing a valiant service to the community in responding to a call to investigate the unsafe use of firearms and their careless storage.

The officers are to be commended, but the force does not need to resort to such statements to justify its actions.
