Early morning fire damages mill

A small saw mill operation on McCurdy Road in Kelowna was damaged by fire early Thursday morning.

Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Captain Tim Light says crews were called to the Deacoff Bros Saw Mill shortly before 1 a.m. on June 16.

Upon arrival, they found a shed on the property ablaze.

"The fire spread to a waste lumber pile," says Light.

As the fire raged, it put several other businesses in the area at risk.

"At full tilt it was throwing off some pretty good embers. The wind was a bit of a problem, but cooler temperatures and higher humidity definitely helped."

Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the day to douse hot spots.

Light says an investigator will attend the scene, but at this point the fire is not suspicious.
