50th anniversary of Kelowna Folkfest draws over 6,000 people on Canada Day
Folkfest draws big crowd
Kelowna Folkfest, the Okanagan’s biggest and longest-running indoor multicultural event, celebrated its 50th anniversary this Canada Day.
Started in 1974 by the late community leader Ben Lee, Folkfest has grown into a tradition that brings people together through music, dance, and food from around the world.
"This milestone year is a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of inclusion and cultural pride that defines our community," said Elna von Dach, chair of the 2025 Folkfest Committee.
"For half a century, Folkfest has remained a space where diversity is not only welcomed but celebrated."
This year’s event drew more than 6,000 attendees.
The lineup included 17 performance groups showcasing cultural heritages through folk dance, martial arts, singing, and interactive drumming.
To celebrate the milestone, a special display is now open at Kelowna City Hall until September 12, 2025. It features old photos, memorabilia, and stories from Folkfest’s 50-year history.
