Métis Community Services Society of BC proposes rentals, child-care space

Metis group wants to build

Métis Community Services Society of BC has submitted a development permit and rezoning applications for a six-storey building on Rutland Road North.

The non-profit organization, which provides holistic services that ensure the health and well-being of the Métis community, plans to put 90 rental units and a child-care centre in the building, which is located at 1370 Rutland Road North, on the southwest corner of Rutland Road North and Fitzpatrick Avenue.

The building, which would be used primarily by Métis families, “will help strengthen Indigenous representation in Kelowna’s labour force,” the application states.

“Culturally specific and appropriate housing, amenities, and services will establish a community hub, strengthening kinship ties within the Métis community and facilitating the transmission of intergenerational knowledge between Elders and families, furthering cultural excellence and nurturing a sense of belonging.”

The housing floors would include 15 three-bedroom, 40 two-bedroom and 35 one-bedroom units. Parking would be one level beneath the building.

The applications will be reviewed by city planners before going before council.
