Lime e-scooters will operate in Kelowna for at least another 2 years

City extends Lime contract

Lime e-scooters and e-bikes will be sticking around in Kelowna for at least the next two years.

The City of Kelowna announced Friday morning that they've extended their contract with Lime for another two years, after the company has operated in town for the past three and a half years.

“Throughout their time operating in Kelowna, staff have reviewed feedback from residents and adjusted the program with Lime to better meet the community’s needs,” said Cameron Noonan, City of Kelowna Transportation Planner.

“Over two million kilometres have now been ridden, with roughly half of those trips replacing a car trip, meaning less traffic on city roads.”

City staff began the process of extending the contract to a single e-scooter operator earlier this year. The city mandates that the fleet size is restricted to 700 e-scooters and 300 e-bikes with at least 100 deployed each day and no more than 200 scooters within the downtown area.

E-scooters first showed up in Kelowna back in the summer of 2019, when the City first issued a permit to Spin, Zip and OGO, but their use was were heavily restricted to certain areas.

Then in the spring of 2021, the provincial government approved a pilot project to legalize e-scooters for use on all places bicycles are allowed, in Kelowna, Vernon and four communities in Metro Vancouver.

With that change, Lime was then awarded a permit to operate in Kelowna in April 2021, along with Zip, Roll and Bird. But the other operators have since dropped off, leaving Lime as the only e-scooter, and now e-bike, provider in the city.

The company announced its one-million-ride milestone in Kelowna back in May of this year.

"Lime is proud of our partnership with the City of Kelowna and excited to continue our successful collaboration. Ridership data shows that people value our safe, affordable, and sustainable e-bikes and e-scooters," said Lime's Sonia Kandola

“As ridership has grown, we've focused on safe riding and proper parking, especially downtown, to benefit all residents and visitors.”
