City approves street name changes

About 160 residents in Glenmore and the Mission will soon be getting a new address.

A portion of Glenmore Road will be renamed Snowsell Street while sections of Paret and Stoneybrook Roads will be changed to Gordon Drive.

The Glenmore Road change is necessitated by construction of the Glenmore Bypass which is expected to be complete this fall.

"Glenmore Road will be reconstructed in a bypass format east of the existing road. It will eliminate residential access to a portion of Glenmore Road," says Subdivision Approving Officer, Ryan Smith.

The old portion of Glenmore Road would be renamed Snowsell Street.

"Usually for road name changes, staff refer to the historical road names list which comes from the Historical Society. In this case, one of the families on that list contacted me and let me know they still reside in that immediate area, that's the Snowsell family."

Smith says while the name change is a hassle for local residents, it is necessary to avoid confusion for emergency crews.

Acknowledging the Snowsell family, which has been in the Kelowna area since 1904, was particularly pleasing for Councillor Graeme James.

"I have the pleasure of knowing some of the Snowsell descendants and they are still living in the Glenmore Valley. I think it is an appropriate acknowledgment of their contribution and long history in Kelowna and the Glenmore Valley," says James.

Residents on both affected streets will receive six months of free mail forwarding from Canada Post.
