Liquor store first of several shops planned for Black Mountain neighbourhood

Black Mountain plaza eyed

It will begin with a liquor store, and the ultimate goal is the addition of several more businesses for the eastern edge of Kelowna’s Black Mountain neighbourhood.

Black Mountain Liquor Store will open later this month at 2040 Joe Riche Rd., providing a more convenient location for area residents to purchase their adult beverages.

After that, Black Mountain Liquor Store manager Mike Linden said the business’ owner and developer, who is a Black Mountain resident, will embark on plans to create a one-stop shopping plaza for area residents.

Linden believes the business—and the future plaza—will be welcomed by neighbourhood residents with open arms, given how far they currently have to go to purchase day-to-day items.

“The location’s great,” Linden said. “Basically anything that a community needs will be serviced. Everything that would have to go into Rutland for, you’ll be able to get here.”

The building, which is located near the southeast corner of Highway 33 and Gallagher Road, is the former home of Black Mountain School and Schoolhouse Cafe. It was constructed in 1922.

More information about what is coming in the next phase of the development is expected to be released this spring.
