Firefighters raise money for charity with fun hockey game

Charity the big winner

Charity was the big winner this weekend when firefighters from two local departments took to the ice at Big White.

Playing on the highest outdoor rink in Canada, members of the Big White and Lake Country fire departments exchanged and pick axes for hockey sticks and pucks during what was billed as the inaugural hockey game between the two departments Sunday.

As is tradition when fire departments gather for charitable events, a firefighters boot was passed around to those in the crowd.

More than $800 was raised for the Firefighter Burn Fund.

Lake Country Mayor Blair Ireland took time from his busy schedule to drop the ceremonial first puck.

Members of the Big White Fire Department won the game 11-9 in what was described as a "spirited affair."
