Central Okanagan Search and Rescue called out after off-roaders get stuck

Search near Dee Lake

UPDATE: 12:35 p.m.

It was a cold night for a group of people stranded while off-roading east of Lake Country.

Temperatures dipped near -20 overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning before the stranded people were pulled out.

COSAR says it was contacted by Kelowna RCMP on Sunday morning to assist in locating two missing Jeeps that had gone for a drive on the Dee Lake Forest Service Road.

The RCMP had tried to find them when they were reported missing on Saturday night but didn’t have any luck.

At first light on Sunday, RCMP dispatched a helicopter and activated COSAR to assist in the search. The helicopter located the stuck Jeeps and relayed the location to ground crews.

While rescuers were en route, another person arrived on the scene and managed to get the Jeeps unstuck. They then drove back onto the clear portion of the forest service road, where COSAR and Mounties confirmed that everyone was okay.

“The occupants did the right things by leaving a trip plan and information on when they should have returned. Once they were overdue, the family made the right choice to contact the RCMP to get everyone activated to assist in locating the occupants,” said Ed Henczel with Central Okanagan Search and Rescue.

He adds that this latest incident comes a week after COSAR was tasked with helping two other stuck motorists just off Bear Lake Forest Service Road. In that case, six people were rescued.
